Croatian Validation of the Multidimensional Measures of Work–Family Conflict and Work-Family Enrichment among Working Fathers

The multidimensional measures of Work-Family Conflict and Work-Family Enrichment scales assess a negative and positive side of the work-family interface. A work-family conflict is a form of an inter-role conflict in which two domains are mutually incompatible to some extent, while work family enrichment refers to an enhanced role performance in one domain as a function of resources gained from another domain. Both scales acknowledge work-to-family and family-to-work directions. This study aimed to test the factor structure, reliability and divergent validity of the two instruments in a Croatian sample of fathers. Participants, 170 fathers of infants, completed an online questionnaire which included the Work- Family Conflict Scale (WFC), Work-Family Enrichment Scale (WFE), and a set of questions on demographic data. The results of the confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) for the Work-Family Conflict Scale showed the best fit for the six factor model. Therefore, it consists of time, strain and behaviour-based dimensions for both work-to-family and family-to-work aspects. The internal consistency was high for the six subscales of the WFC. The CFA for the Work-Family Enrichment Scale also had a very good fit for the six-factor model. The WFE comprised the work-to- family development, affect and capital subscales while the family-to-work direction included development, affect, and efficiency subscales. The internal consistency was very high for all the subscales of the WFE. Finally, the correlational analyses between all subscales from Work-Family Conflict and Work-Family Enrichment scales suggested that these two measures share only a minor proportion of the variance. Therefore, we can conclude that the Croatian versions of both WFC and WFE scales are valid and reliable instruments that capture different aspects of the work-family interface. These instruments could be used to measure the work family interface for working fathers of infants to help them balance these two very important life roles.
