Bioethics of Sport: What Kind of Future is There for the Contemporary Sports?

Introduction At this point, the field of Bioethics of Sport is in an establishing phase as a Philosophy of Sport sub-discipline. Sport-bioethicists are mostly dealing with the issues of the future of the sport, but also its present, trying to resolve issues that galloping bio-medical and other technologies are throwing in front of the sport. Resolution of the precedent bioethical cases like Oscar Pistorius, Markus Rehm or Caster Semenya, among many others, have huge importance and impact on our views and understandings of sport, but also competition, and fair play, as well as the integrity of sport per se. Such cases are changing and modifying sports, messing with the conceptions of equality of opportunity, values and virtues in sports, at the same time influencing the sports regulations and rules, and making pressure on sports institutions and their decisions. Methods The research was conducted by the application of the critical analysis method and a critical review method. Results and discussion In this paper I will propose seven possible group of issues for the future of sports: (1) categorisation of sport (Camporesi&McNamee, 2015, 2018), (2) unregulation of the clinical research (Camporesi, 2015), (3) gene modifications – homo athleticus (Petranovic et al., 2019), (4) gene enhancement and new paternalism (Škerbić, 2019), (5) genetic screening laboratories (Camporesi&McNamee, 2018) (6) new means of performance enhancement (Miah, 2016), and (7) cyber-athletes and coercion (Škerbić, Greguric, 2019). Conclusion Firstly, it is an obvious fact that bio-medical technologies and advancement entered deeply into sports, changing it, as well as its practice- communities. Secondly, it is up to sports- bioethicists (among others like officials, contestants, scientists…) to anticipate and propose measures and solutions to preserve the nature, spirit and integrity of sports. Thirdly, proposed seven measures in this paper intend to be (exemplary) contribution in that regard.
