The long lives of transferred museum objects: the exchange of paintings from the Strossmayer Gallery (Zagreb) for the baptismal font from the Museo Correr (Venice) in 1942

In this paper, we present an example of the strong, politically-imposed cultural transfer process, which went along with the specific political situation of the first half of the 20th century, culminating in a politically enforced exchange of art objects that took place during the first years of the Independent State of Croatia (1941-1945). In 1942, the two Vittore Carpaccio paintings from the Strossmayer Gallery in Zagreb were exchanged for the so-called Baptismal Font of Duke Višeslav from the Museo Correr in Venice. Besides the analysis of archival findings, which offer a deeper insight into the circumstances of the exchange and its later consequences, we consider the different origins and later provenances of several artworks brought together in a single political and historical whirlwind by the historical episode of the 1942 exchange.
