Individualized approach to students with cerebral palsy during the course of physical education
According to categorization of the Rule Book about Elementary School Education for pupils with Disabilities cerebral palsy belongs to the group of physical disabilities. Among children with physical disabilities, there are about thirty-three percent of them who suffer from cerebral palsy. Since we know there are about forty thousand pupils with physical disabilities in Croatia, whose number is increasing every year, it is very important to have teachers who are able to plan and provide Physical Education for those individuals who have special needs. Based on one student’s case, it will be shown how to approach to pupils with cerebral palsy during the Physical Education classes, based on children’s disability level. Results of psychological examination have shown that student has border intelligence, and consequently with that customized education has been recommended. Pupil is physically medium-developed and his morphological characteristics show higher values in height.In cooperation with the doctor and expert services that work in elementary school, crucial subjects whom pupil with cerebral palsy can perform were selected in all 4 grades of his elementary education. Main operating plans and programs for the first grade of elementary school are made. Evaluation criteria have been defined as well. Pupils with cerebral palsy are involving in Physical Education classes more and more recently. Taking in consideration that they have physical disabilities, it is very important to have individualized approach and have rational expectations from them, which are in harmony with their abilities. Those individual programs have a lot of benefits. One of the examples is that pupils will gain many skills and knowledge for everyday life. Of course, taking part in Physical education classes has a lot more benefits, such as socialization and integration. And, of course, they won’t be isolated
