Megatrends Shaping International Tourism by 2030
Over the past six decades, tourism has experienced continued expansion and diversification to become one of the largest and fastest-growing economic sectors in the world. As a worldwide export category, tourism ranks third after chemicals and fuels and ahead of automotive products and food. In many developing countries, tourism is the top export category. According to UNWTO’s long-term forecast report „Tourism Towards 2030“ international tourist arrivals worldwide are expected to increase by 3.3% a year between 2010 and 2030 to reach 1.8 billion by 2030. The industry’s ability to continue generating growth, creating jobs and enabling national development and regional integration is dependent on whether it recognizes and adapts to key megatrends that will affect the industry in the long term. Euromonitor International (2017) has identified 20 of the most influential megatrends set to shape the world through 2030. In this paper the Authors attempt to identify and analyse megatrends that will affect upon the future of tourism industry. Successfully identifying, analysing and proactivelly reacting to megatrends is essential for success in consumer markets.
