Observing and Enhancing the Controlled Ignition of Pulverised Solid Fuels
This study has emphasised two specific subjects. The first one being related to the properties of pulverised coals during the early stages of devolatilisation, which is particularly relevant to the problems of ignition, the stability of the flame and the formation of nitrogen oxides in utility boilers through the numerical predictions of experimental results obtained from the Flat Flame-Turbulent Jet (FFTJ) apparatus. The second one is related to the application of plasma systems for the processing and utilisation of pulverised coal, which is relevant to the problems of the economical and the environmental viability of a coal-fired power plant, and to the enhancement of the combustion process through the numerical tests on the plasma burner and industrial scale utility boiler operation. In addition, the experimental exercise on the coal gasification in laboratory-scale plasma reactor has been undertaken.
