Neogene weathering crust on peridotites from the Žepče area, Dinaride Ophiolite Zone, Bosnia
Within the Dinaride Ophiolite Zone, a weathering crust on peridotites is developed along the contact between the uppermost part of the Žepče ultramafic body and overlying fresh-water sediments of the Neogene intramontane basin. Three zones can be distinguished: 1) the fresh zone composed of spinel lherzolites, 2) the middle transitional zone composed of serpentinites which are crosscut by veins and veinlets filled by secondary carbonate and SiO2 minerals, and 3) the upper zone, yellowish in colour which is composed of altered rocks mixed with nontronite-containing soil. Petrographical, mineralogical and geochemical features of the three zones have been determined by optical and electron microscope and X-ray diffractometry and fluorescence. The Žepče peridotite weathering crust originated during the Neogene from surface waters enriched in CO2 by the interaction with organic matter.
