Political implications of language policies in the Southeast Europe region: measures taken and future prospects
South Eastern Europe is an area where language pressure probably played a more important role than in other European areas. Throughout the past, this area was a crossroads between empires, and this historical fact has significantly influenced the language policy of the 20th century, but also in the past. Croatia and Slovenia were part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire for centuries, while Bosnia, Serbia, Macedonia, Greece, Albania, Bulgaria and Romania were all under the Ottoman Empire. However, the influence of imperial Russia, as well as the USSR afterwards must not be neglected, since it had an influence on the language policy in the region.
