Autonomous learning through children’s literature
Children's literature deserves an appropriate place in adult EFL courses. Using it in teaching children English has become a welcome practice, and the education of English teachers, particularly those of primary classes, should include thorough education in children's literature. Adult learners also need to gain relevant experience of reading interesting authentic texts (in the language in which they were originally written), which support creativity. In particular, this practice can contribute to developing a learner's linguistic competence, social competence, literary competence, as well as co-operative learning strategies. Carefully selected examples of children's literature in adult FL classes may create opportunities for autonomous learning and provide an authentic context for foreign language usage.
