Character names in Croatian translations of Alice in Wonderland.

This paper focuses on the analysis of Croatian translations of Lewis Carroll’s children’s novel Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1865) with respect to the translation or transfer of the original names of the protagonist and other characters. There are nine Croatian translations of Alice in Wonderland, and some of them have been re-published several times. The first Croatian translation by Mira Šunjić (later Jurkić-Šunjić) was published in 1944, and the most recent translation by Borivoj Radaković appeared in 2016. The names in individual translations are compared with the original and interpreted in terms of translation strategies (Franco Aixelá 1996) to establish if there is a preference of domestication or foreignization in the corpus. Special attention is given to personal names which are descriptive or semantically loaded. Translation strategies are detected and described, and their effects on the meanings in the target texts are interpreted. Finally, the implications of the translators’ choices in rendering personal names are considered. It is shown that the method of dominates in the analysed corpus and that there is a general inclination towards using conservation strategies. Despite the frequent use of autonomous creation, as a translation strategy typical of substitution and characteristic of the domesticating method there are few modifications of the semantic structure of the original storyworld of the novel in the analysed corpus. The modifications are mostly spotted in specific details and in connection with names that have a multi-layered meaning. It is concluded that such translation procedures are motivated by the features of the source text itself.
