Evaluating Concept Design Model of Fishing Vessels
A concept design model of the Mediterranean fishing vessels is developed jointly by the University of Trieste and University of Zagreb [1]. It was presented in various stages of development since 1987. A wide database of fishing vessels makes it possible to improve the reliability of parameter relations in the design model. The model is included in the multi-attribute design procedure, which explores design space and produces Pareto-optimal (non-dominated) designs in multi-attribute environment. Within these non-dominated designs final design is selected by searching for minimal distance to the ideal design using fuzzy concept to describe aspiration level, subjective decision making and Chebyshev metric in the decision space. In order to make the model practical, it must be tested, evaluated and compared to existing vessels. It is the only way of establishing the level of confidence. Of all the attributes evaluated by the model the seakeeping related ones were founded on the relatively slim basis. Data obtained by the systematic calculation of seakeeping merit of the data base vessels made a suitable basis for prediction of seakeeping quality. In order to obtain better insight in the seakeeping-related attributes prediction by the model, a study was performed using data of four existing fishing vessels. Two smaller vessels operate in the Adriatic and two larger in the Ionian Sea. The models developed from the experimental basis and model developed from the systematic seakeeping calculations produce comparable predictions.
