5G Radio Access Network Slicing
This chapter describes reasons for introducing the fifth generation of mobile networks, 5G, newly appearing services and concepts of 5G architecture. The focus is put on the concept of network slicing, especially the radio access network slicing (RAN slicing). Network slicing is a new concept in 5G architecture that provides resources and functionality to realize a specific network service. As different network slices share a common infrastructure, the appropriate slicing strategy needs to be applied to realize desired characteristics of each network slice instantiated. RAN slicing is discussed considering different slice characteristics: isolation, dynamicity, and fairness. Mathematical modeling to achieve described characteristics is also presented.
