The effect of composition and molecular weight of methacrylate pour point depressant on low temperature behaviour of its oil solutions

Alkyl methacrylate copolymers are widely used as highly effective pour point depressants of lubricating mineral oils. They prevent gelation of the oil and deposition of n-paraffins from the base oil at low temperatures. Therefore, they enable lubricating oil to flow at much lower temperatures. In this study, the effect of methacrylate additive composition and molecular weight on pour point of its oil solutions was determined. The copolymers of various composition and molecular weight distributions were sythesized by free radical copolymerization of methyl methacrylate, dodecyl methacrylate and octadecyl methacrylate in solution. The pour point of pure methacrylate additive solutions in API Group I and API Group III mineral base oils was -30 ± 3 C and -35 ± 2 C, respectively, regardless of the polymer molecular weight (investigated range of weight average molecular weight was from 20 up to 200 kg/mol). Considering the effect of copolymer composition on pour point depression, the crucial is content of methyl methacrylate, but the ratio of long chain alkyl methacralte is also significant.
