Preparation and properties of PAO based nanofluids with different carbon nanotubes

Nanofluids are colloidal suspensions made out of nanoparticles (< 100 nm) in some base fluid - oils, water and ethylene glycol are the most common. They are expected to give better thermal performance than conventional fluids due to the presence of suspended nanoparticles which have high thermal conductivity. Also, nanofluids can be engineered to work as efficient lubricants for specific uses, especially in minimum quantity lubrication (MQL). For instance, the high temperature generated when machining aerospace alloys namely, titanium and nickel alloys, accelerate the tool wear rate and affects the physical properties of the machined surface. Flood coolant is usually the effective traditional solution to dissipate the heat and reduce its negative impact on tool performance and surface integrity. The disposal of the coolant causes environmental concerns and the generated fumes during machining also present health concerns. Minimum quantity lubricant is as an alternative coolant strategy to reduce the amount of used coolant and environmental concerns associated with flood coolant. Here, the enhancement of thermal conductivity and viscosity of nanofluids helps to reduce the values of the friction coefficient, and the cooling lubricant properties are significantly improved when compared to the base fluids. The aim of presented work was preparation and characterization of PAO nanofluids with pure and oxidized carbon nanotubes. The stability of nanofluids was improved by methacrylate based surfactant. Characterization of prepared nanofluids was made by determining rheological behavior, thermal conductivity and wear-preventing properties by using four-ball method.
