Context and Location, Croatian Architecture Exhibited at MoMA
The second part of the twentieth century is a time of turbulent creation of new states, of new relations between the West and the East, of a different, vigorous and pervasive economy on the one side and poverty on the other. It was the time of reviewing architectural theories set in the first half of the century and earlier, the time which political, ideological and social component play increasing role in understanding and creating a new architecture. Building made an impact on socioeconomic activities aimed at fostering a steady development of all spaces. A new situation, entirely different from pre- war one, brought about a number of changes in creative imagination, which in that period had to strive for basic reconstruction, the construction of essential infrastructure, housing and an emerging industrialisation programme. The Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts’ Croatian Architecture Museum holds exceptionally valuable works by some of Croatia’s leading architects. In June of 2018 Museum were presented with the opportunity to exhibit material from the museum’s holdings to the demanding international public, as a part of an exhibition dedicated to Yugoslav architecture entitled Toward a Concrete Utopia: Architecture in Yugoslavia, 1948 -1980 opened at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City.
