The development and evaluation of the psychosocial treatment of problem gamblers in prisons – Results of the Pilot Implementation
Due to an increasing prevalence of problem gambling, that is often in correlation with other risky and criminal behaviour, a Croatian Ministry of Justice initiated tender for projects that would aim at developing treatment programs for criminal offenders in prisons and on probation. Association for Creative Social Work, together with the experts from the Faculty of Education and Rehabilitation Sciences (Zagreb) gained a 3-year projects funds to develop and implement the first psychosocial treatment of this kind. Project started in 2017 with the training of professionals, in 2018 a 19-week treatment Program was developed, while in 2019 pilot implementation was conducted. This presentation will focus on the process of the Program development and outcome evaluation in three Croatian prisons with N=27 male prisoners. Evaluation design in two time-points used a comprehensive battery of instruments measuring gambling related symptoms, cognition, emotions and social skills of prisoners. The results will be analyzed in the context of further treatment development and implementation challenges.
