Professional and normative standard in midwifery
The general aim of the presentation is to consider the possibility of defining the common professional and normative standards of the midwifery profession in neighboring countries. The working aim is to create the preconditions for internationalization of midwifery studies based on the common core curriculum, and forms of continuous midwifery training. The presentation consists of three parts. The first part presents and analyzes the underlying parameters of the professional standard of the midwifery profession. Therefore is to be considered the common content and methodological perspectives of the professional standard of midwives in the countries of the region. This could be done by qualitative and quantitative analysis of available documents and published professional and scientific papers that discuss the issue of professional standards of midwifery. Special place in this part of the presentation belongs to the analysis of curricula that educate midwives in Croatia and neighboring countries. The emphasis in the presentation is put on: a) gaining knowledge focused on professional responsibilities and obligations ; b) applying knowledge, skills and competences in midwifery practice ; and c) enhancing the quality of midwifery care directed towards the best interests of the patient / client, newborn and their family members. The content of the second part of the presentation is the normative standard of the midwifery profession. Its backbone contains legal and ethical standards that the midwives undertake to provide quality midwifery care and responsible professional behavior. The presentation will analyze the laws and ethics codes of countries in the region whose midwives can evaluate their daily practices and activities according to ethical and legal norms. The third part of the presentation will present the activities of the Midwives chambers, their organizational, content and methodological perspectives. It will also include to what extent such associations are involved in the development of midwifery standards, and whether or not they conduct an external evaluation of the learning outcomes achieved depending on the degree of midwife education. The conclusion of the presentation underlines what is needed to be done in order to achieve the defined aim of the presentation.
