Pictographs in crisis response: the role of visual communication in chemical emergencies
The paper aims to contribute to a hitherto somewhat under-researched field of inquiry within crisis communication: visual communication via pictographic signs, with an emphasis on pictorial information regarding chemical hazards. Chemical hazard signs serve to indicate a specific type of hazard and necessary precautions, and their use is regulated by national legislation and international standards organizations. Likewise, they are designed to be immediately and easily recognizable to anyone handling potentially hazardous material, but not necessarily to the general populace. As such, they are a fairly specialized form of visual technical communication. The authors aim to analyze the communicative properties of a select number of most frequent chemical hazard signs, thus highlighting the role played by visual communication in the communicative process of disaster response, and in order to lay the groundwork for the subsequent survey of chemical hazard pictogram awareness among the students of Crisis Management and Chemical Engineering.
