ASSESSMENT OF QUALITY OF LIFE IN PATIENTS WITH INFLAMMATORY BOWEL DISEASE
Introduction Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic and lifelong condition that is often diagnosed among younger adults. Since IBD incidence and prevalence are increasing in the last few decades throughout Europe, the illness is becoming more of a burden to society due to substantial impact on quality of life. Aims and methods The aim of this study was to investigate the differences in quality of life between patients with IBD and healthy controls and to investigate whether quality of life differs among patients with IBD with reference to their disease (ulcerative colitis vs. Crohn’s disease). This study included 60 patients with IBD (30 with ulcerative colitis and 30 with Crohn’s disease) and 60 age and gender-matched control subjects. The Short Form-36 (SF-36) questionnaire was used for measurement of health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Statistical software MedCalc ver. 11.5.1.0 for Windows (MedCalc Software, Ostend, Belgium) was used for statistical data analysis. Results The groups significantly differed in general health(52.83±19.23 vs. 73.42±17.36 ; P˂0.001) and social functioning (76.25±23.66 vs. 86.04±16.13 ; P=0.009). There was no significant difference in physical functioning (82.90±19.02 vs. 88.83±19.00 ; P=0.090). However, significant difference was observed in role limitations due to physical health domain (64.58±40.99 vs. 92.50±18.73 ; P˂0.001) and bodily pain (73.96±23.74 vs. 86.29±18.17 ; P=0.002). There was no significant difference between patients with IBD and controls in role limitations due to emotional problems (P=0.075) or energy/fatigue domain (P=0.185). Controls scored significantly higher in emotional well being domain (66.44±13.40 vs. 73.47±15.54 ; P=0.009). Conclusion Patients with IBD have reduced quality of life compared to healthy controls. Impaired quality of life can substantially impact patients' well being, social life and work productivity.
