Autologous growth factors in dental implant surgery

Growth factor is a naturally occurring substance capable of stimulating cellular growth proliferation, healing, and cellular differentiation. Growth factors released from platelets signal local mesenchymal and epithelial cells to migrate, divide, and increase synthesis of collagen and matrix, thus providing a scaffold that encourages migration of osteoblasts. In many clinical cases the intended implant site is inappropriate due to the poor bone quality or to an insufficient quantity of bone. Recent dental researches and clinical studies have focused on the use of bioactive molecules to induce local bone formation. The various growth factors that have an effect on the bone regeneration have been discovered and used in augmentative and regenerative procedures in dental implant treatments.
