Building an effective network through distributive school leadership

The broader aim of this research (supported by the Croatian Science Foundation) is to identify the characteristics of (distributive) leadership practice in Croatian primary schools. The research is focused on detecting the characteristics associated with school effectiveness and student achievement. The aim of the paper is to focus attention on school leadership characteristics from the perspective of building networks within schools. Networks allow different stakeholders (principals, teachers, parents, pupils) to participate and work together toward shared goals by collaborating, interacting, making decisions and pooling resources. The importance of building networks lies in the notion that they instigate acting more effectively with regard to school improvement and pupil achievement. The aforementioned school leadership characteristics are categorized as follows: (a) participation in the process of making different types of decisions, (b) the type of participation and influence in the decision making process ; (c) social interactions between different stakeholders in the decision making process in schools. The data were collected by a constructed and validated questionnaire for examining the characteristics of school leadership from teachers’ perspective. The basic population in this study consists of all primary schools in Croatia. From the population of the schools, 100 primary schools were selected by random sampling and teachers have been selected by an additional procedure taking into consideration the independent variables of sex, work experience, etc. Data processing was performed by standard statistical methods of descriptive and inferential statistics. Statistical program IBM SPSS 20.0 was used for data processing.
