Comparison of beam finite elements based on Euler-Bernoulli beam theory
When finite element method is employed for ship structural response calculation, beam finite elements are used in initial design phases in order to shorten time needed for model generation as well as for response calculation itself. Problem arises in modelling interactions between plating and corresponding stiffeners. There are three beam finite elements based on Euler-Bernoulli beam theory dealt with in this paper: hybrid, native eccentric and modified eccentric beam element. A short theoretical description of all the three elements is given as well as description of stress field calculation corrections for native eccentric beam element. Also the results of deformations and stresses calculations are presented first for a simple ship panel structure and second for a real ship model (RoPax).
