“Sun” and “Moon” in Atlas Linguarum Europae
For both Sun and Moon we can clearly reconstruct Proto-Indo-European origin. Sun in PIE should be derived from *seh2u-l 'sun', while for the moon we can reconstruct PIE *meh1-n-s- 'moon', and in many IE languages, the word for 'moon' also means 'month'. The question arises if the same meanings are present in non Indo-European languages of Europe and Asia. In a few Indo- European languages, the word for „month” is derived from the word for moon ‘celestial body’. Based on data available for ALE the maps in GIS were created for both sun and moon as well as motivational analysis.
