The potential of Adriatic microbiome in the blue biotechnology
The marine environment provides valuable economic, social and cultural resources, which can contribute to the sustainable economic development of small island developing states (SIDS) and larger coastal states. The blue biotechnology industry uses marine organisms to find compounds of interest for human use. Marine organisms produce countless lipids, proteins, and enzymes that help them thrive and survive in the ocean. Less than 1% of living microorganisms can be cultured in the laboratory, but even this minute part has produced incredible discoveries such as antibiotics that have saved millions of lives. The Adriatic Sea is the northernmost part of the Mediterranean Sea. One of the most important features of the Adriatic Sea are karstic hydrogeology and the existence of highly stratified estuaries along the Croatian coast and isolated habitats that emerged from the karst sinking. All these specific environments have been identified as a possible genetic resource for novel biotech pathway and species. Marine metagenomics and 16S sequencing have demonstrated a huge diversity in the investigated environments and possible novel pathways are identified. Still a big open question remains the cultivation of interesting strains.
