A comparison between microalgae Microchloropsis gaditana and Pseudochloris wilhelmii cultivated in oil refinery wastewater from the perspective of biodiesel production
Nanoeukaryotic marine algae Microchloropsis gaditana and Pseudochloris wilhelmii were compared from the perspective of lipid production as a source of biodiesel. Their growth properties were evaluated in 50% oil refinery wastewater at 18°C and 80 µmol photon m-2 s-1. P. wilhelmii grew faster in the exponential phase, but after 10 days of growth it produced less lipids in biomass (35.5%) than M. gaditana (40.6%). Total lipid yields between two species were similar, whilst both produced fatty acid methyl esters feedstock of higher quality in lag phase. M. gaditana also showed significantly lower requirement of phosphorus for the build-up of biomass. This might be a valuable feature for lowering the total production costs of biomass with a high content of lipids of suitable quality for biodiesel production.
