Botulinum toxin Type-A improves life quality and rehabilitation in painful cervical dystonia.
We invesigated the effects of small dose of botulinum toxin type-A (50U) for the treatment of pain in cervical dystonia. Twenty-one patients with painful cervical dystonia (11female/10 male, mean age 43 years) were included in the 3-month prospective study. The patients baseline level of pain, dystonia score (Toronto Western Spasmodic Torticollis Rating Scal), Quality of life score, Functiona capacity score, physician's and patient's Global assessment scale were assessed before Botox injections and each week during 3-month study. Our result shown statistically significant (p<0.05) pain relief already one week after treatment. On the contrary dystonia score did not changed during the study. Quality of life and patients's global assessment were also significantly improved as well as rehabilitation procedure. This indicates that pain relief in cervical dystonia patients could be related not only to muscle relaxing properties of Botox, but also to some additional mechanisms
