Provveditore Antonio Bernardo and the Defence of Šibenik
In the second phase of the Candian War (1649 – 1669), the defences of the city of Šibenik were strengthened by the orders of provveditore generale Antonio Bernardo (1656 – 1660). That was just a part of Bernardo´s wider plan for the defence of Venetian Dalmatia and Albania. Two large bastions were bulit at the eastern part of the city rampart, one of them protecting the main city gate (Porta terraferma). Several artillery postions were set around St. Michael´s castle and serious works undertaken on the fortress of St. John above Šibenik. Furthermore, Ridotto del Baron on the nearby hill, was fortified to become a real fortress – forte del Baron. New research will show us how exactly Bernardo´s work´s been done and who were key military and engineering figures behind these efforts.
