We need to talk about the 1990s in the Balkans, again
Editors of the volume „Nineties. Short cuts“(Devedesete. Kratki rezovi, Jesenski i Turk & IEF, November 2019) have spent the last four years designing research, discussing research results and devising new paths of inquiry regarding this decade, which was marked by multiple transitions in the Balkans. In this discussion they will present two main thematic nodal points of this edited volume. On one hand, the most recent discourses of hate which have in the past few years, once again, pervaded public space in Croatia, seem to have incited some authors to reexamine the topics related to human rights, such as the persecution of national (and ideological) minorities or women rights. The other major trend indicates a clear shift in the body of research of the 1990s, represented by the re-reading of some of the major phenomena of the decade through an economic lens, including the new rise of Marxist perspectives. Some of the subjects discussed will be the critique of rentier capitalism, the decline of workers' rights, the economic impact of various war legacies, etc.
