Benefits of classical concerts on students’ well- being

Theoretical background: Music improves mood (Freeman, 2000), reduces stress, anxiety and depression (Beck et al., 2000), decreases loneliness (Cohen, 2006) and enlarge social musical identities (Davidson, 2015). Today's effort is to find a way how to increase and enrich the students' experiences paying attention on what music provokes. The European research project Schools@Concerts: Tuning up for the music experience are willing to give students the possibility to attend and experience classical concerts as well as learn from it. It considers the following main topics: goals and expectations from students, music teacher and concert host ; preparation process and follow up activities ; students' experiences. Aim: To show whether classical concerts improve well-being in children in compulsory school in Serbia, Croatia, and Poland. Method: Classical concerts were organized in Zagreb (Croatia), Gdansk (Poland) and Belgrade (Serbia) during 2018. Sample: 20 students aged 11 to 13 in Serbia, 36 students aged 12 to 15 in Croatia and 8 students aged 10 to 11 in Poland. From the pre and post-event questionnaires, interviews of students and music teachers, and questionnaire for concert organizers the authors detected the possible benefits of classical concerts on students well-being. Results: Serbian and Croatian results from the students’ questionnaire and interviews show that, in great number, music makes students free of daily routines, help them forget the sorrow, overcome anger and cope with stress. But, while Serbian results show that most students think music helps them to become social persons, Croatian results show only half of the students think the same. Also, while Polish results show that only one student think that music can relax him, Croatian and Serbian results show that the majority of students consider this role of music. From the students interviews it can be seen that Classical concert was a pleasant experience for all students: it was pleasant (Serbia) nice, interesting, unforgettable (Croatia), exciting, relaxing (Poland). From the teacher’s perspectives, classical concerts affect the students' preferences for classical music (Serbia) and in that way they can experience a classical concert live (Croatia). In both countries, from the teachers’ view is visible that classical music was a pleasant and enjoyable experience. The Serbian concert organizer mentioned that students had the opportunity to hear some classical compositions performed by the philharmonics, the unusual ensemble, while the Croatian one highlights the concert dancing and multimedia elements. Conclusion and Implication: Classical concerts are one of the possibility to enrich the students’ life and their well- being but only if they will attend the concerts in great number and often, the results will be visible.
