The University of Zagreb Under Surveillance of Supreme Power – League of Communists of Croatia 1959 – 1965
The University of Zagreb in the People's Republic of Croatia (PRC), under Communist rule, was a declarative autonomous institution. However, in the communist system, no institution had real autonomy. Thus, the University acted under the supervision of the League of Communists (LC) who sought to direct and supervise its work. In its sessions, the Executive Committee of the LC regularly discussed various issues of the University and made decisions that were taken in the field. These issues included the organization of the University and the studies, the quality of the professors, the disputes concerning the relationship between formal autonomy of the University and self-management as a social system, political education and the activities of students in faculty management, student standards, scholarships and so on. This paper, within the time frame 1959 – 1965, a period between two LC congresses, examines relations between the University and the authorities – the state, and the political body with supreme political power, League of Communists – which were, in any case, closely intertwined.
