S-T segment depression in the electrocardiogram and mortality in the population - A prospective study

During 23-yeara prospective study of ischemic heart disease, S-T segment depression in the ECG of a middle-aged population in Croatia was investigated. The investigation was performed in a randomly selected sample of the population, comprising 2414 subjects with a wide spectrum of health: 1326 females and 1088 males on three occasions, 1969, 1972 and 1982. Subjects included in the study were those born between 1915 to 1934, according to place of residence, selected at random from their Mulicipal Register of the Population in six regions of Croatia: 3 urbans and 3 rurals. Subjcts were followed-up according to a standardized medical questinnaire, a clinical examination by an internist, and an ECG. This investigation indicats that total S-T segment depression in the ECG of a middle-aged population is relative frequent finding and is more frequent in females (10.69%)than in males (6.24%). During the period of the follow-up this finding became more frequent with regard to all cnahges of the S-T segment. The deepest S-T segment depression of 1 mm or deeper, was relatively less requent in all subjects: 0.33% during the first examination, 2.52% in the third examination. In the first two examinations it was more frequent in females than in males: 0.37%:0.18%, and 0.45%:0.18%., and in the third examination this frequency in both sexes was similar: 2.48:2.57%. In the third examination this frequency was 5.5 and 6.7 times higher in relation to the first and second examination, and in males as much as 14 times higher than in the previous two examinations.
