Sažetak
A total of 488 gulls of 4 species (Yellow-legged Gull, Larus michahellis ; Black-headed Gull, L. ridibundus ; Caspian Gull, L. cachinanns, and Common Gull, L. canus) were captured using cannon net, in a period between November 2016 and February 2019 on Zagreb city garbage dump (45.45 N 16.01 E) in order to collect cloacal swabs. Taken swab samples were tested for the presence of thermophillic Campylobacter spp. according to EN ISO 10272-1 method while the species determination was performed by multiplex PCR. 69 isolates were tested using MLST. There were 138 positive swabs (28.28%). The most prevalent was C. jejuni (125 or 90, 58 %) followed by C. lari (12 or 8, 70 %) and C. coli (1 or 0, 72 %). Multi locus sequence typing was done on 58 jejuni and 11 lari isolates. All isolates gave full sequence type (ST) profiles. 3 new allels from jejuni samples and 3 from lari samples were described. Also 13 new jejuni STs and 7 new lari STs were described. More than half jejuni isolates belonged to ST-1275 clonal complex (CC) that is almost exclusively found on wild birds or environmental samples, and only exceptionally in human stool or poultry samples. Alltough most of the isolates belong to CCs and STs characteristic for wild birds, the observed high percentage of the gull swabs positive for thermophillic Campylobacter contributes thesis of the importance of gull species as important reservoir and as a source of possible infection for animals and humans.
