Sažetak
Granular cell tumors (GCTs) were first reported in man in 1926. This term is descriptive for histogenetically heterogeneous group of tumors because despite immunocytochemical studies, histogenesis of these cells remains controversial. GCTs have been reported in different animal species including ferrets and occur both within the nervous system and extraneurally. To the authors knowledge, only one report of GCT in the ferret family can be found in scientific literature. In this study, a case of GCT in the CNS of a ferret (Mustela putorius furo) is described. A 5-year-old castrated female ferret without clinical signs of disease was temporarily put in care. A routine health check was done beforehand. The level of troponins was slightly elevated but the cause was not found with an ultrasound, an ECG or an X-ray. After three weeks the animal showed lameness (right hind leg) which progressed and it became totally ataxic. The animal developed inappetence and incontinence. It was treated with Sukralfat and Meloxoral. After two days the animal died and was submitted to necropsy two days after death. Full necropsy was performed and samples of the brain with an expansile mass and other representative parenchymal organs were submitted for histopathological examination. Additionally to routine hematoxylin and eosin methods, the samples of brain with the expansile mass were stained with periodic acid-Schiff (PAS). Immunohistochemistry was also done/made (S-100 protein and vimentin) At the necropsy, the most significant finding was a 14mm x15mm white to gray friable expansile well demarcated mass with slightly irregular margins and a malacic central area. The mass was found in the medial to caudal part in the left frontal lobe of the brain. It compressed adjacent brain tissue and expanded toward subependimal areas of the left lateral ventricule. Histologically the mass was composed from sheets and nests of large round to polygonal cells admixed with a few spindle shaped cells supported by a sparse fibrovascular stroma. Neoplastic cells had abundant granular pale eosinophilic cytoplasm and round to oval nuclei that were central to eccentrically placed, and stipled chromatin with a single central nucleolus. Mitotic figures were rare. In the middle of the mass was liquefactive necrosis. There were also multifocal hemorrhages. The granules were PAS-positive. The tumor cells were immunopositive for vimentin and weakly positive for S-100 protein. The described mass was diagnosed as a granular cell tumor. In conclusion, GCTs are rare in ferrets and this is the first recorded case of this tumor as the primary tumor in the CNS of a ferret in Croatia and the second such case in scientific literature.
