Riforma sociale e e revisione del restauro scientifico a Spalato tra il 1945 e il 1950
Diocletian’s Palace in Split passed through a long history of conservation and transformation. Before 1945 there existed two major conservation traditions, Austrian and Italian ; the former was more inclined to discreet maintenance of the status quo, the later favoured corrective interventions, tending towards aesthetic integrity and emphasizing ancient Roman and Venetian monuments. Concepts of Giovannoni’s scientific restoration, undiscussed by Croatian experts between two world wars, were adopted during the visit of Italian academics to Split in 1941. This article discusses the Yugoslav part of contesting Giovannoni’s scientific restoration after the war or obscuring of concepts expressed in his Spalato romana published in 1942. It compares the proposals of Italian experts and post-war proceedings of art historian Cvito Fisković (1908-1996), who became director of the Conservation office in Split, supervising major interventions in the Diocletian’s Palace.
