Comparison of efficency of gutta-percha solvents in re-treatment of endodontic fillings
The aim of this study was the quantify the amount of remaining gutta-percha/sealer on the canal walls following use of three different solvents eucalyptol, halothane and orange oil.Seventy single rooted teeth were prepared using a step-back technique and obturated with gutta-percha and Diaket sealer by cold lateral condesation. The specimens were stored in saline solution for 180 days, after which they were divided into three groups. Retreatment was done with the solvents in conjunction with hand instrumentation. The procedure was complete when there was no evidence of gutta-percha and sealer on the files or paper points. Teeth were split longitudinally and scanned with a camera connected to a stereomicroscope. the area of remaining gutta- percha and sealer were measured using the computer software program ISSA.There were no significant differences in area of remaining gutta-percha between the three solvents. Eucalyptol required significantly less time than halothane and orange oil for filling removal. Eucalyptol was the most rapid solvent for dissolving gutta-percha
