Quantitative Analysis of the Unemployment

The aim of this paper is an empirical analysis of the unemployment in the EU and Croatia and analysis of the specific unemloyment rates in Croatia. Pre-war hidden unemployment, the transition crisis and warfare aggression upon the Republic of Croatia has resulted in drastic reductions of economic activities, so that Croatia has one of the highest unemployment rates in Europe. The structure of unemployment in Croatia is evidently unfavorable, as a great part of the unemployed people consists of young and educated persons, hence the most productive and most creative part of the population. In Croatia, except a huge number of unemployed persons, a great problem is the increasing duration of unemployment. The significant regional disparities in Croatian unemployment are the consequence of inequalities in regional structure and development. The regional unemployment disparities have to be solved by the economic development strategy which is regionally oriented based on endogenous potential of the regions. The mounting unemployment in Croatia caused more concrete measures to be taken in order to reduce unemployment, and especially to encourage the employment of the young, the long-term unemployed and unemployed women, and achieve greater efficacy of the labour markets. In this way it has been confirmed that the drive against unemployment remains the priority task in Croatia. Analysis of unemployment rate shows that in the Republic of Croatia it is mainly a question of cyclical unemployment, and it is expected to be reduced with the economic upswing.
