Cycle of Contemporary Nursing Development: Research - Education - Practice - Research
Introduction: Technological advancements, changes within healthcare systems, development of nursing science, complexity of nursing work, nursing shortage, migrations, mobility, and nursing education warrant the need for research of major factors influencing changes and further development in professional education and practice of nurses. Everyone involved in contemporary nursing is given both a chance and responsibility to contribute to its development. Aim: To present the cycle of contemporary nursing development: research – education - practice – research. Discussion: International research into nursing practice and nurses’ education and training should be conducted simultaneously in different countries. The obtained results should be used to adapt the curriculum to be tailor-made for newly demanded nursing competencies. The curriculum needs to support nursing practical training and reflect its trends. Nurse lecturers need to participate in designing and developing the curriculum, its implementing and managing based on contemporary educational models, principles and evidence. Educational strategies, teaching methods, learning environment, and evaluation are dictated by the learning outcomes. A nurse lecturer has freedom of choice but lectures need to be student- oriented. Interdisciplinary and cross- curricular approaches in teaching ensure coherence of educational processes. Students acquire content knowledge more easily and understand it more clearly. Also, they develop required skills and habits while educational values are promoted. Cross-curricular knowledge is especially significant in clinical settings where students do their practical training. They prepare, perform and evaluate planned activities, either individually or in pairs/groups, draw conclusions and do self- evaluation and evaluation of all the participants. Students’ evaluation depends on learning outcomes and level of education. Upon completion of professional education it is important to implement acquired knowledge and skills, and evidence-based healthcare in nursing practice. Lifelong learning and professional development should be pursued. The cycle ends and begins with research of nursing practice. Therefore it is necessary to conduct and participate in further international research on nursing practice and education of nurses. Conclusion: Cycle: research - education - practice - research is the basic precondition of contemporary nursing development.
