Vižula - villa or palace

In South Istria, on Ager Pollensis on the entrance to the Kvarner Bay is situated Medulin Bay - Medulinski zaljev, a spacious sea mirror (8 x 6 km) limited to the west with the Promontorium Pollaticum (Cape Kamenjak) and Cape Marlera on the east. At the entrance there are seven small islands with some ancient remains. Central place occupy two peninsulas: Vižula and Pineta with Cape Kašteja. Archaeological evidences of Vižula - Isola del Vescovo extend today on 25 hectares on land and under water. After elaboration of the documentation, in situ control, archaeological survey and non-destructive prospecting, three units are visible: villa marittima or palace with facade large about 720 m on the west, dock with mansio (?) to the south and villa or pars rustica to the northeast with a necropolis on today's isthmus of Burle. The change in the landscape confirmed with the excavation and aerial documentation of the structure - roman road in Burle cove. Architectural remains are registered in Medulin in Siga, Munkalba, Bijeca, Pineta, Kažela, place Pomer in Sveti Ivan od Izvora (San Giovanni di Fontanella), Munat and S.Andrea, in place Premantura - Močile cove with Cape Školjić are noted, documented and partially investigated. Even on the islands that close a deep inlet, traces of ancient buildings are noted. Rugged coastline, good shelter for inland navigation, abundance of products for consumption and trade, excellent connection with Colonia Pola and Municipium Neactium by land and with Mediterranean by sea give possibility to the architectonic development in the Imperial period and the survival in late antiquity.
