Qualitive analysis of fuctional simptoms after laryngectomy
Laryngectomy is a complex, mutilating surgical procedure that leaves a person with numerous lasting effects which affect daily functioning and life in general. The aim of this study was to analyse the ten most common functional symptoms that occur after laryngectomy, regardless of them being a primary or a secondary consequence of the procedure. The survey was conducted in the University Hospital Center Osijek (Croatia), at the Department of Otorhinolaryngology, and it included 35 laryngectomy patients of both sexes, with average age being 63.6 years. Data was collected using a questionnaire containing ten variables related to the respiratory tract and voice, sensory function and upper digestive tract. The variables were scored using the Likert scale with scores ranging from 1-5, where each score represented a qualitative characteristic. The results were statistically analysed in SPSS program for data analysing. Results show the strongest interference on three specific variables. Two variables are related solely to the airways and suggest the need for pulmonary rehabilitation.
