Co-occurrence of Color and Emotion: A Corpus-based Study
This thesis presents a usage-based corpus study of co-occurring patterns of English color and emotion terms. A set of 11 basic color terms and 135 emotion terms serve as the starting point for the search of a limited set of complementation patterns in a computerized corpus which includes 1, 532, 229 Twitter posts containing English color and emotion terms. The patterns obtained from that corpus have been described and analyzed with regard to cultural and cognitive motivational models. The results are presented from emotions as points of reference and colors as points of reference. The findings indicate that the primary sources behind the found color-emotion patterns from the dataset were motivated primarily by facial color (the levels of hemoglobin and oxidation), body (humoral pathology) and psychological meanings implied by colors (warm, bright colors are associated with positive emotions ; cold, dark colors are associated with negative emotions).
