The beginnings of tourism in Dubrovnik
In the period of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the development of tourism on the eastern Adriatic coast was associated with the culture of relaxing and enjoying the natural enjoyment, mostly health related, and from the purpose of climate change to leisure. Regarded as the modern phenomenon, tourism had an impact on the economic development of part of the Croatian coast. Dubrovnik was marked by the upward trend in tourism at the beginning of the 20th century. The first organized group of visitors used to arrive by steamboats and the first modern hotel Imperial was built in Dubrovnik with the investment of the Austrian Lloyd shipping company. The beginning of the First World War broke off the tourist tide in 1914. Tourism continued to develop in the first Yugoslavia, but it lost part of its pre-war features and adapted to the needs of the new market of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes. The first travel agency Mandus was founded in 1920, followed by the Association of Societies and Institutions for the Promotion of International Tourist Flows in Dubrovnik in 1923, which was the forerunner of today's Dubrovnik Tourist Board. The Association brought together businessmen and prominent Dubrovnik intellectuals and politicians who recognized tourism in the future leading activities of the City. Numerous tourist publications and tourist guides were published in foreign languages. Special interest tourism has been developing which enabled Dubrovnik to become a recognizable tourist destination of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. The aim of this paper is to analyze the tourism beginnings in Dubrovnik, which had significantly different characteristics to those of tourism today.
