New approaches in music based on Slavonian melos among Croatian composers in the period between the two world wars

Musical creativity in Croatia in the period between the two world wars was under the influence of the socio-political circumstances. It is marked by a strong national orientation in music, which a large number of composers belonged to. The source of their inspiration became a rural environment, peasant life, as well as the music, which is an integral part of the everyday life in the countryside. The attempt to create artistic music based on traditional roots, produced a large number of composers' works. In these works, we often find quoted folk melodies, while some composers go a step further, finding the traditional undertone in melody segments, rhythm, instrumentation, performance peculiarities etc. In addition to an extremely rich traditional musical heritage of Croatia, some of the composers expressed their interest in the traditional music of Slavonia (traditional music of the eastern part of Croatia). This paper will try to show how much and in what ways Slavonian folk music participated in these processes. We will give a general outline of its key characteristics as well as some specific examples to present its presence within individual compositions. In doing so, we will look at the impact of "new" music, which undoubtedly left its mark on the opus of the time with its stylistic traits. We will try to show how these musical features merged with music, which builds on the traditional foundations. The starting point of our research will be the composers’ works inspired by traditional Slavonian music, created in the period between the two world wars. These are, among others, works by Croatian composers Jakov Gotovac, Boris Papandopulo, SlavkoZlatić and Franjo Dugan Jr. Composers outside Croatia showed interest in folk music of Slavonia as well, as will be presented in the example of the composition of the Slovenian composer Vasilij Mirk.
