Deformation monitoring of aluminium foams compression
Foamed aluminium is, principally, a composite material consisting of aluminium or aluminium alloy matrix and of pores filled up with a gas distributed throughout the matrix. Closed-cell aluminum foams belong to the class of cellular solid materials, which have wide application in automotive and aerospace industries. Energy absorption of closed-cell aluminium foam were investigated through quasi-static uniaxial compression. Testing was carried out on universal testing machine, with feed rates of 6 mm/min and 60 mm/min. Sample compression was recorded with a digital camera and samples stress was compared at different length reduction. Non-uniform structure and local density variations resulting in variability in energy absorption properties. Absorbed energy at small deformation (at the beginning of the compression) doesn’t depend significantly on the aluminium foam density. By increasing the deformation, the energy absorption of higher density foams increases faster.
