Open-Ended Coaxial Dielectric Probe Model for Biological Tissue Sensing Depth Analysis at 2 GHz
Limitation of sensing depth affects the results of dielectric constant measurements in heterogeneous media such as layered biological tissues. A common realization of an open-ended coaxial probe based on RG405 semi-rigid coaxial cable geometry was modelled to serve for a single frequency analysis of the sensing depth at 2 GHz, using FEKO electromagnetic simulation. This study first confirmed the conclusions of the published studies on the very limited sensing depth in water-Teflon combination, and furthermore showed that the sensing depth of a layered skin-fat-muscle combination at 2 GHz is limited to the skin only.
