Application Of GIS In Forest Seed Units Division

Through the Croatian history, the foresters have been the ones that deserved most credit for the keeping of the forestry tradition and preservation of great forest wealth. In the Republic of Croatia, there are 2 485 610, 51 ha of forest and forest land, mostly covered with natural forests. In order to keep the sustainability of our forests and their natural diversity, we have to respect the prescribed goals of the forest management, which are: - to provide the sustainability of the ecosystem - to maintain and improve the welfare function of forests - to manage forests in a progressive and sustainable way. It is the activities in the forest that best reflect a good and succesfull management, and in line with the production factors they directly influence the quality of our stands. The steps that would be in accordance with the modern management trend also demand the developmment of the seed production. All the specified tree species are represented and classified. New databases that we needed for our work were connected into the geographical information system. We drew the first digitalized maps of the territory of the Republic of Croatia divided into the management units to the scale 1:300000. Application of new technologies in forestry opened a number of new possibilities of problem solving, as well as provided an easier access and steering of the existing information. Through the modern technology, scientific research has been brought closer together with the forestry practice.
