Monitoring of intestinal virome in commercial turkey flocks in Croatia reveals high Astrovirus prevalence
Turkey production is highly compromised by enteric problems. Different viruses can cause the problem, but Astroviruses are the most frequently confirmed in early age. Because of the health problems in several poult flocks with enteritis and mortality, monitoring was performed to define the etiology. After pathomorphological examination indicated enteric changes, duodenum/jejunum samples were taken and viral metagenome was identified with MiSeq (Ilumina, USA) and results were analyzed using Geneious software. Monitoring done on 7 flocks revealed high incidence of turkey Astroviruses in three flocks, and Rotavirus in one flock, while two young flocks, with age three and five days, and one older, at 54 days, were negative. Also, continuous monitoring on one flock in weekly intervals showed age dependent incidence, with high turkey astrovirus sequence number in early life, already from 4 days of age, but lower or negative after 4 weeks. This also imply the probable vertical transmission with later clearance of viruses. Mentioned results imply that high biosecurity measures are needed on turkey farms, especially on parent flocks, with recommendation for Astrovirus vaccination.
