Missed care from the patient’s perspective- A scoping review
Background: Missed care, defined as any aspect of patient care omitted or delayed, is receiving increasing attention. The main reason seems to be the imbalance between patients’ nursing care needs and resources available. Missed care is an ethical issue challenging nurses' professional and moral values, and emphasis has mainly been on nurses’ perspective. Patients’ perspective has not received adequate research interest. Objectives: To describe patients’ perspective to missed care. We aim to foster discussion about the importance of the topic for patients, and to encourage further research. Research design: A scoping review methodology was applied. The search was conducted to PubMed, CINAHL, PsycINFO, Web of Science and ProQuest databases, using terms: omitted care, unfinished nursing care, implicitly rationed care, care undone, care unfinished, missed care, care left undone, task undone and implicit ration with no time limitation. Inclusion criteria were: Investigated missed care, data was collected from patients and English language. Data: Thirteen studies were selected. Five were conducted in USA, three in Switzerland, one in South-Korea, Cyprus, Mexico, Great Britain and one study included data from eight countries. Twelve studies were quantitative. Data was analyzed with content analyses. Findings: Patients reported missed care in the basic care, communication and timeliness. Missed care was associated with patient- reported adverse events and patients’ perceptions of staffing adequacy and mainly caused by lack of staff and insufficient experience. Patients’ health status was predicting missed care opposed to gender. Results with age and education level were conflicting. Discussion and conclusion: Evidence exists, that patients have identified missed care. Cross-sectional designs did not render conclusion regarding causality. Further research is needed on missed care from the patient’s perspective, with a special emphasis in ethics
