An Overview of the Investigation of Groundwater Contamination of Nitrates and the Retention of Heavy Metals in the Channel Sediment
In the continental part of Croatia, especially in the small catchments of the Danube and Drava rivers, where agriculture is the dominant activity, the great pressures on water quality and quantity are significant. Nitrate pollution is the most significant pollution and represent dominant problem in protection of surface water and groundwater. The problem of pollution contaminated by melioration channels is another important aspect of pollution that occurs in predominantly agricultural areas. According to the present research, dominating pollutants in the sediment are phosphorus and heavy metals, and the major causes of pollution are traffic and agriculture, while concentrations vary depending on the hydrological characteristics (large water occurrences and connections with other hydrographic networks and contamination conditions), local conditions and so on. The possibility of disposal of excavated sediment to agriculture is determined according to the concentration for which in many countries there are no prescribed monitoring measures and limited values as well and Croatia is one of those countries.
