The Development Of Interest for STEM School Subjects and Stem Careers During Primary Schooling

This paper reports and discusses the results and main research findings on the development of interest for STEM school subjects and STEM careers during primary schooling. Results and research findings presented in the paper are collected in the JOBSTEM research project conducted in Croatia, which is based on a cohort-sequential longitudinal research design. A total of 1920 primary school students and one of their parents/guardians from 16 schools in Croatia participated in the study. The participants were grouped in three age cohorts, attending fourth, fifth and sixth grade of primary school at the beginning of the study. These three cohorts were followed longitudinally through three measurement waves during three consecutive years. In each of the measurement waves, students completed comprehensive questionnaires assessing research constructs related to STEM school achievement, self-competence beliefs, attitudes, interests, activities and family characteristics and behaviours. The results related to changes in interest of students for STEM school subjects as they progress through upper grades of primary school are presented as well as the main research findings of the project related to the development and determinants of interest for STEM careers and STEM school achievement. The implications of project findings for educational policy and practice are discussed
