Emergency response activities and collecting damaged radiationdevices from the waraffected area in Croatia
A number of various devices containing ionizing radiation sources were in use in the area affected by the recent war in Croatia. They have been mainly used in industry and medicine. Among these devices a large fraction relate to 151 radioactive lightning conductors with maximum individual radioactivity of 19,5 GBq and to roughly 8300 ionizing smoke detectors. In destruction caused by the war operations, a number of these devices were damaged, destroyed or even missed/lost. This paper is aimed to reviev critically actions undertaken to (re)collect these radiation sources, experience gained and lesons learned. The paper highlights the importance of a well-organized national regulatory system as a precondition for the efficient identification an save collection of radiation sources which were under ruins in the war affected area.
